Their identities have been swiped from their brains in a very Eternal Sunshine fashion-not because they were hoping to escape some sort of heartbreak, however, but because they are trying to escape violence in their past. ![]() ![]() The title refers to a remote, off the grid town in the middle of Texas-a place named Caesura, a small village the locals call "the Blinds." No one is really a local, per se everyone who lives in Caesura came there from someplace else, although their origins are unknown. Reading The Blinds, however, snapped me out of it even as it provided a satisfying escape. And I’ve often thought, "It would be really nice to get away from everything, disconnect from the world, live a quiet life in the middle of nowhere, and forget about it all." ![]() I have yelled at my television and deleted social media apps from my phone. I have to admit something: Several times in the last few months I’ve wanted to snap my laptop shut and throw it across a room. ![]() ![]() ![]() The many line drawings are unusually beautiful, and now can be compared to a wonderful collection of photographs in Fossils of the Burgess Shale by Derek Briggs, one of Gould's students.īurgess Shale animals have been called a "paleontological Rorschach test," and not every geologist by any means agrees with Gould's thesis that they represent a "road not taken" in the history of life. Gould describes how the Burgess Shale fauna was discovered, reassembled, and analyzed in detail so clear that the reader actually gets some feeling for what paleobiologists do, in the field and in the lab. Just how unlike is the subject of Gould's book. ![]() These 600-million-year-old rocks preserve the soft parts of a collection of animals unlike any other. ![]() The Burgess Shale of British Columbia "is the most precious and important of all fossil localities," writes Stephen Jay Gould. ![]() ![]() ![]() It is also the only work on the subject in the English language based on the original Norwegian sources, to which Huntford returned to revise and update this edition. THE LAST PLACE ON EARTH is the first of Huntford's masterly trilogy of polar biographies. This account of their race is a gripping, highly readable history that captures the driving ambitions of the era and the complex, often deeply flawed men who were charged with carrying them out. I recently finished reading Roland Huntfords excellent book Last Place on Earth, a dual biography that retells the story of Scott and Amundsen in their. Scott, who dies along with four of his men only eleven miles from his next cache of supplies, became Britain's beloved failure, while Amundsen, who not only beat Scott to the Pole but returned alive, was largely forgotten. In the brilliant dual biography, the award-winning writer Roland Huntford re-examines every detail of the great race to the South Pole between Britain's Robert Scott and Norway's Roald Amundsen. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the South Pole was the most coveted prize in the fiercely nationalistic modern age of exploration. ![]() ![]() Her family members, especially her mother, think it’s just a phase and chastise her obsession, but Angel stands strong in her love of the band. Angel, 18 and finishing up secondary school, collects merch, memorizes songs and videos, and proclaims to genuinely love the members of the band. Angel is similarly obsessed with “The Ark”, a three-member boy band from England who are just starting to become internationally recognized in this novel. I even drafted a letter to my favorite member, Lance, but I guess even 10-year-old me was wise enough not to send it. I was reminded of my NSYNC days when reading this, remembering how I collected their merch and thought that going to one of their concerts was the greatest moment of my life at the time. The story is technically part of the “Osemanverse”, but I couldn’t find any direct connection to Oseman’s other novels, not that it needs a connection to be interesting. ![]() ![]() ![]() Jimmy is the lead singer of the internationally famous boy band that Angel is obsessed with, so it’s fascinating to hear both perspectives on fandom and fame from people who are both coming of age. ![]() This YA novel by Alice Oseman follows dual teenage narrators Angel Rahimi and Jimmy Kaga- Ricci. ![]() 7/7/2023 0 Comments Tiny beautiful things review![]() I’m pleased to report that Tiny Beautiful Things joins the ranks of these greats - and manages to do it twofold, focusing on Clare’s relationship with her daughter Rae ( Tanzyn Crawford) in the present day, as well as exploring her relationship with her own mother through flashbacks. Lady Bird captured the complexities of the mother-daughter relationship back in 2017 with an authenticity I hadn’t seen before, and Everything Everywhere All at Once did it again last year. And I am an accomplished writer - even if I haven’t accomplished it yet.” These lines serve as a thesis statement of sorts to the dramedy that introduces us to Clare at a time when her family, writing career, and life, in general, are, to put it frankly, in shambles. “I am always three things,” our protagonist, Clare ( Kathryn Hahn), says toward the end of Episode 2 of Hulu's Tiny Beautiful Things. ![]() 7/7/2023 0 Comments The price of salt![]() ![]() One of the main reasons for this is the way in which their relationship is presented in the narrative many works of lesbian fiction written around the same time as this one seem to suggest that it is the responsibility of the homosexual couple to fit in with the rest of the world, and suffer a doomed and loveless existence because of it. Unusually for lesbian fiction, The Price of Salt has a relatively happy ending nobody emerges unscathed from the events that unfold in the novel, but there is a hint that the two main characters, Therese and Carol, might ultimately get to walk off into the sunset, together, hand in hand.
